NearMap photomaps

I have recently become aware of the NearMap Photomaps product. NearMap are a Perth based company specialising in aerial ortho-rectified images.

Presently they are making this service free for most uses, Government excluded. I have been amazed by the quality of the images they are producing. I am also amazed that they intend to photograph the major cities in Australia every month and other major regional centres every 3 months.

This project is particularly interesting to me as I do a lot of work in the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) area, particularly to do with irrigated horticulture. Having up to date images enables us to view change in crops over a period of time. This is very important with the lack of water for irrigation in our region (Mildura), as we can tell over time how many crop have been removed or they are no longer being irrigated. Check out NearMap at www.nearmap.com and see if they have imagery for your area. You will be surprised at the quality as it is much better than Google Earth.
